چکیده

The ultrafast solvation dynamics of courmarin 314 (C314) molecules at the air/water interface has been shown to depend on their orientation with respect to the plane of the interface. A pump/second harmonic probe method using femtosecond laser pulses were used to measure the interface solvation dynamics. The pump light was S polarized, i.e., in the interface plane, or P polarized, i.e., in the plane perpendicular to the plane of the interface. The S pumped C314 molecules yielded a solvation time of 820 ( 60 fs, whereas P pumped yielded a solvation time of 1215 ( 90 fs. The interface inhomogeneous broadening on the solvation time scale is due to the differing orientations of C314 at the air/water interface.

Solvation of the Azide Anion (N3) in Water Clusters and Aqueous Interfaces: A Combined Investigation by Photoelectron Spectroscopy, Density Functional Calculations, and Molecular Dynamics Simulations†

We report a photoelectron spectroscopy and computational study of hydrated N3 anion clusters, N3(H2O)n (n ) 0-16), in the gas phase. Photoelectron spectra of the solvated azide anions were observed to consist of a single peak, similar to that of the bare N3, but the spectral width was observed to broaden as a function of cluster size due to solvent relaxation upon electron detachment. The adiab...

Solvation dynamics in reverse micelles: the role of headgroup-solute interactions.

We present molecular dynamics simulation results for solvation dynamics in the water pool of anionic-surfactant reverse micelles (RMs) of varying water content, w(0). The model RMs are designed to represent water/aerosol-OT/oil systems, where aerosol-OT is the common name for sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate. To determine the effects of chromophore-headgroup interactions on solvation dyna...

The Hydrophobic Effect and the Influence of Solute-Solvent Attractions

We have studied the effect of weak solute-solvent attractions on the solvation of nonpolar molecules in water at ambient conditions using an extension and improved parameterization of the theory of solvation due to Lum, Chandler, and Weeks [J. Phys. Chem. B 1999, 103, 4570]. With a reasonable strength of alkanewater interactions, an accurate prediction of the alkane-water interfacial tension is...

Spectrum of Slow and Super-Slow (Picosecond to Nanosecond) Water Dynamics around Organic and Biological Solutes.

Water dynamics in the solvation shell of solutes plays a very important role in the interaction of biomolecules and in chemical reaction dynamics. However, a selective spectroscopic study of the solvation shell is difficult because of the interference of the solute dynamics. Here we report on the observation of heavily slowed down water dynamics in the solvation shell of different solutes by me...

An Improvement in Fluorocarbon Chain Re-orientation by Reactive Dyes

There is an increasing demand for air-dry performance of fluorocarbon finished materials. Thus, dyeing with different types of reactive, mono, bi, and multi-functional, dyes was evaluated as a novel treatment to create correct surface interface to maintain fluorocarbon performance without ironing or tumble drying. The effects of pre-treatment on fluorocarbon finishing of cotton fabric, a cellul...
